Andy Burnham is seeking “common ground” with Donald Trump as he jets to the US for the first time as Prime Minister.
He told reporters on the flight to New York, where he will attend the UN General Assembly, that Downing Street has established a “productive relationship” with the White House.
During their first face-to-face meeting, which follows two phonecalls since Burnham became PM, he said “common ground” will be the flavour of the day.
He said: “We’ve found a connection. So, I will go with where I feel it’s right, to meet him where he is at, and search for that common ground, which I’m sure we’ll find.”
Burnham added: “I’m looking forward to it.”
