Chancellor John Healey’s Budget offered some welcome relief, but the grim truth is that families face energy bills higher than those following Putin’s invasion of Ukraine
Time for change
While millions of families dread another winter of heating homes and unaffordable bills, oil giant Shell is laughing all the way to the bank. Its obscene £8 billion profits, fuelled by Donald Trump’s reckless war with Iran, amount to £60,000 every minute.
That is more than most workers earn in a year, while parents struggle to feed their children and pensioners fear turning on the heating.
Chancellor John Healey’s Budget offered some welcome relief, but the grim truth is that families face energy bills higher than those following Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.
Living standards are falling, household incomes are being squeezed, and the Institute for Fiscal Studies warns public services face further cuts without another £17 billion. Britain cannot endure another lost decade of declining living standards.
Labour must be bolder. The banks and energy giants enjoying bumper profits should shoulder more of the burden.
Working people have paid the price of global crises for far too long. They deserve protection, fairness and genuine change.
Dangers of the manosphere
There is something deeply sinister about an online industry that profits from turning vulnerable boys into angry, isolated young men.
The poisonous manosphere feeds on insecurity, peddles hatred of women and convinces boys that seeking help is a sign of weakness. And behind the toxic messages are influencers making money from misery.
Academics are right to demand that this growing menace be treated as a public health threat, with the same seriousness as tobacco.
But tackling misogyny also means understanding why so many young men feel abandoned, excluded and without hope.
Better education, decent jobs and accessible mental health support are essential. Social media giants must also be held accountable for spreading this poison. Boys deserve better role models and brighter futures.
Traitor’s treason
James Acaster has committed the ultimate crime on The Traitors: telling the truth. After Richard E Grant’s earlier confession, it seems celebrities are struggling with the concept of deception. At this rate, Claudia Winkleman will need to recruit some politicians.
