“Under Donald Trump, the Pentagon is pressing ahead with a spectacle that should have been buried with the darkest chapters of American history”

There is something utterly obscene about a country whose military leadership has become so morally bankrupt that it wants to turn the killing of a prisoner into a televised spectacle for the masses.

The fact that this proposal comes from the United States of America, rather than one of the world’s most repressive regimes, should fill every American with shame.

Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth wants to livestream the firing squad execution of mass murderer Nidal Hasan. His victims deserve justice.

But what possible purpose is served by broadcasting a man being shot dead to millions of strangers? Are viewers supposed to cheer? Should families gather around their televisions? Will the Pentagon provide commentary?

The sheer depravity of the idea is staggering. Even the United Nations has warned it could constitute torture.

Yet under Donald Trump, the Pentagon is pressing ahead with a spectacle that should have been buried with the darkest chapters of American history.

Hegseth calls it a lesson in consequences. The real lesson is how appallingly low America’s leadership is prepared to sink.

End the gravy train

Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor has spent a lifetime enjoying unimaginable privilege, disgracing the monarchy and leaving others to clear up his mess.

Now his entitlement has landed his brother with a £1.5million bill. While the disgraced former prince was busy socialising with his paedophile pal Jeffrey Epstein, his lavish 30-room Royal Lodge home was apparently deteriorating around him.

Now, King Charles has been left to pick up the staggering repair bill. The money is coming from the monarch’s private income, sparing the taxpayer-backed public purse another financial burden.

But why should Mountbatten-Windsor escape responsibility for the mess he leaves behind? He has already enjoyed decades of extraordinary privilege, luxury and protection. Now, even in disgrace, someone else is cleaning up after him.

Andrew should pay his own debts. The royal gravy train must end.

‘Extraordinary kindness’

Some people make the world a better place simply by opening their doors and their hearts.

For 16 years, Stockport’s wonderful Mama Flo has fed thousands of people who might otherwise have gone hungry.

Her Pride of Britain Award celebrates extraordinary kindness.
