Andy Burnham took a cheeky swipe at Danny Dyer after the TV star claimed he didn’t know who he was.
In an expletive filled clip that went viral this week, the BBC soap legend, who played Mick Carter on EastEnders for a decade, said he didn’t know he “didn’t know” who the Prime Minister was or who voted for him.
Footage shared online from a protest over public ownership of the water industry showed Mr Dyer being asked if he had a message for the Prime Minister. He said: “I don’t know who the Prime Minister is, mate. Do you?”
On being told Mr Burnham was in No10, he said: “Yeah, but who is he? I don’t understand. Did anyone vote for him? Because I didn’t vote for him. I think we’ve had successive prime ministers that are c***s. End of.”
Speaking to reporters as he travelled to New York, the PM quipped: “I’m not sure I know who he is. Is he the father-in-law of a West Ham player?”
Mr Dyer’s daughter Dani is married to West Ham United star Jarrod Bowen. The Eastenders legend previously went viral in 2018 when he raged against David Cameron over Brexit.
Branding the ex-Tory PM a t***, he said: “How comes he can scuttle off?” He called all this on. Where is he? He’s in Europe, in Nice, with his trotters up, yeah, where is the geezer? I think he should be held account for it.”
The Prime Minister comes face to face with Mr Trump in New York on Tuesday at a time of heightened tensions, after the US President weighed in over the future of the Falklands and the unification of Ireland.
Mr Burnham will need to perform a high wire act to build bridges with Mr Trump while standing up for Britain at a time when the US President’s disastrous Iran war is driving up prices at home.
The PM’s official spokesman said: “The British people at home are at the forefront of the Prime Minister’s mission in New York this week, because to deliver at home, we must ensure we’re leading international efforts to brighten a darkening global picture.
“Conflicts, climate change, and the attempts by hostile state actors to sow division through dis and misinformation are not issues we’re facing alone, but they are issues the prime minister is determined the UK will play a leadership role in combating.
“To give people the breathing space they need, he’s clear we must work with our international partners to face up to the biggest challenges of our generation.”
Mr Burnham will be accompanied by his wife Marie-France van Heel, who is expected to meet the spouses of international leaders while in New York.
